Preservation and Archiving Policy
Introduction
The International Journal of Clinical Anesthesia and Research (IJCAR) ensures long-term preservation, accessibility, and integrity of all published content through recognized digital archiving programs and repository networks. Our preservation strategy guarantees the perpetual availability of scholarly material even in the event of data loss, technical failure, or publisher discontinuity.
“Preserving today’s knowledge ensures that tomorrow’s science has a foundation to stand on.”
Purpose of Archiving
The primary objective of IJCAR’s preservation and archiving policy is to:
- Ensure long-term digital preservation of all published content.
- Guarantee continuous accessibility and discoverability.
- Protect the integrity and authenticity of the scholarly record.
- Enable retrieval even in cases of technological obsolescence or publisher shutdown.
Archiving Systems in Use and Under evaluation
| System | Full Form / Description | Purpose | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| LOCKSS | Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe | Distributed archiving system ensuring preservation by multiple university libraries worldwide. | Under Evaluation |
| CLOCKSS | Controlled LOCKSS | Global dark archive for perpetual access in case of publisher failure. | Under Evaluation |
| PKP PN | Public Knowledge Project Preservation Network | Preserves OJS-based journals by automated deposit to a global network of archives. | Available |
| Crossref Metadata Deposits | DOI Registration & Metadata Archiving | Ensures citation continuity and discoverability across indexing databases. | Available |
Preservation Levels
IJCAR’s preservation system covers the following levels of archiving:
- Bitstream Preservation: Protecting the digital file integrity from corruption.
- Content Preservation: Maintaining access to the full text and supplementary materials.
- Functional Preservation: Ensuring accessibility of files despite software/hardware evolution.
- Metadata Preservation: Retaining bibliographic and citation data in structured formats.
Preservation Process
- Upon publication, each article’s metadata and full-text PDF are automatically deposited in the LOCKSS and PKP PN networks.
- Backups are regularly created on secure servers and external storage systems.
- Metadata is mirrored through CrossRef and OAI-PMH to ensure redundancy.
- In case of a server failure, identical content is restored from redundant repositories.
OAI-PMH and Metadata Harvesting
IJCAR fully supports the Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) allowing metadata interoperability across digital libraries, archives, and indexers (e.g., PubMed (Only NIH-Funded articles), Scilit, and Google Scholar).
File Formats Preserved
- PDF/A (ISO 19005-1) – Long-term archival version of PDF files.
- XML (Crossref compliant) – For structured metadata and interoperability.
- HTML – For web-based accessibility and indexing.
- Image/Media (JPG, PNG, MP4) – For graphical and supplementary data preservation.
Data Integrity Verification
Periodic checksum validation and content audits are performed to verify integrity of archived materials. The process ensures no unauthorized modifications or deletions occur in preserved files.
Collaboration with Libraries and Indexes
IJCAR partners with international repositories and libraries for preservation redundancy, including:
- National Library of Medicine (NLM)
- Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
- WorldCat Digital Collections
- Google Scholar and OpenAIRE networks
Disaster Recovery and Continuity
In the event of data loss, cyber-attack, or publisher cessation, IJCAR’s archiving's participation ensures open access continuity through mirror repositories worldwide.
Policy Summary
| Preservation System | Function | Access Type |
|---|---|---|
| LOCKSS | Distributed archiving through library networks | Public/Institutional |
| CLOCKSS | Global dark archive activation if needed | Emergency Access |
